FI connects with grassroots activists at JPIC Meeting in Guatemala

An FI representative joined the Third JPIC Meeting of the Franciscan Family of Central America in Guatemala City, to meet and connect with human rights defenders.

Like many other Central American countries, Guatemala is experiencing a growing ecological crisis, housing and unemployment issues, and unjust labour practices.  At the end of April, an FI representative joined the Third JPIC (Justice, Peace, and Integrity of Creation) Meeting of the Franciscan Family of Central America in Guatemala City, to meet and connect with activists who work with affected communities throughout Central America.

In addition to hearing the stories and experiences of activists who work alongside the most marginalised people in Central America, to protect their rights, including the right to water, to prior consultation, and to the control of natural resources in the face of transnational mining companies, FI was able to link its work directly to the needs expressed at the meeting.

One activist, for example, has been accompanying a community affected by a mining project in Guatemala. He is a lawyer and expressed that they have now exhausted all  national mechanisms to get resolution.  He connected with FI at the meeting, to explore a partnership and discuss what could be done at the international level, to bring attention to this community and their plight,  and to bring justice to their situation.

Two other participants described the current situation in their communities, noting that having FI’s support would make a significant difference in how local and national authorities perceive and treat them, because of FI’s status and presence at the United Nations.

FI continues to look for opportunities where it can contribute to making a difference, partnering with grassroots communities and activists who seek real change towards justice and the protection of human rights for the most vulnerable.
