FI Urges Indonesian Government to Implement UPR Recommendations

Torture; freedom of expression; human rights defenders; extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions; Indigenous Peoples, and women are issues of concern in highlighted in the FI joint report on Papua that need to be addressed during the Universal Periodic Review of Indonesia in May/June 2012. Despite these issues being raised during the country’s UPR in 2008, national policy has not been reformed. 

On 10 December 2011, FI signed a joint letter of concern to the President of Indonesia about the severe human rights violations committed by the Indonesian security forces against peaceful participants of the “Third Papuan People’s Congress” in Abepura, Jayapura City, on 19 October 2011. Read letter>>

Juvenile justice, enforced or involuntary disappearances and extrajudicial executions, and the right to education including indigenous children, were issues of concern highlighted in a FI joint report for the Universal Periodic Review of the Republic of the Philippines in May/June 2012.

Franciscans Report Systemic Injustice in Brazil

FI submitted a report for the forthcoming UN Universal Periodic Review (UPR) on Brazil in May/June 2012. The submission highlights two systemic problems.

Firstly, the lack of protection for human rights defenders who are subject to physical violence, threats, and judicial harassment when advocating for the right to land, indigenous peoples’ rights, and environmental rights. Secondly, a failure to guarantee minimum conditions for female inmates detained in state institutions.

FI Addresses Justice Concerns in the UK

FI submitted a joint report for the UPR of the UK to be held at the United Nations, Geneva, in May/June 2012. The submission addresses the UK Government’s use of public policy to enforce destitution of asylum seekers whose asylum claims have been rejected by the UK Border Agency (UKBA). 

FI’s recommendations include, amongst others, that the UK Government: provides asylum seekers whose applications have been rejected and are awaiting their return access to financial support, accommodation, health care and legal aid.

FI Submits UPR Report on India

Trafficking in persons, right to food, rights of the child, rights of Indigenous Peoples, and rights of the Dalits are key concerns in India according to the UN Universal Periodic Review (UPR) report submitted by Franciscans International (FI) and the Congregation of Our Lady of Charity in December 2011.  The country comes under review during the UN Human Rights Council Session 13 in May-June 2012. The report includes several recommendations for the Government to fulfil including: amend or implement further legislation to protect victims from these violations; and work more closely with the respective UN Special Rapporteur concerned with  the issue.

It details whether UPR recommendations have so far been fully, partially or not at all implemented.

UPR Report on Tanzania

In March 2011 FI submitted a UPR report to the UN on the human rights situation of Uganda for consideration by the Universal Periodic Review Working Group at its 12th session, from 3 to 14 October 2011. The report highlights key concerns related to the justice system and conditions in prisons, human trafficking, indigenous peoples rights, and right to education.

UPR Report on Uganda

On 14 March 2011 FI submitted a UPR report to the UN on the human rights situation of Uganda for consideration by the Universal Periodic Review Working Group at its 12th session, from 3 to 14 October 2011. The report highlights key concerns related to the right to life, liberty and security of person, child labour, maternal health, rights of persons living with HIV/AIDS, and environmental issues in Uganda.

UPR Report on Timor-Leste

On 21 March 2011 FI and partners submitted a joint-UPR report to the UN on the human rights situation of Timor-Este to be considered during the 12th session of the UPR Working Group in October 2011. The report highlights concerns on the Rights of the Child which include issues relating to the juvenile justice system, violence against children and the right to education.
