Birth registration - A step towards protection

Birth Registration, as part of Civil Registration, is the official record of a child’s existence. It is a fundamental human right enshrined in Articles 7 and 8 of the 1989 UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Birth registration is the document that establishes legal identity of a child. It is also a prerequisite to the realization of a series human rights ensuring child’s development and well-being, ensuring protection against abuse, exploitation, violence and statelessness. This film was produced by the Universal Birth Registration Working Group to which FI is active member. It features input from government, UNHCR and key NGO representatives on the importance of civil registration and the key elements of the 2013 UNHCR Executive Committee Conclusion on the topic.
