Urgent Appeal to Hold Syriah Accountable Under International Law

Calls for action outside the UN, NY

FI and 60 other NGOs co-signed an urgent appeal for the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) to hold a Special Session to consider the findings of the Syrian Commission of Inquiry to ensure accountability.

A report on Syria will be published by the HRC International Commission by the end of November 2011. If it finds that crimes under international law have been committed by the Syrian Government, the NGOs urge for the UN Security Council to refer the situation to the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, Netherlands.

Attack against villagers related to POSCO project, India

Mr. James Anaya, Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples

Franciscans International urgently informed the UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Mr. James Anaya, about the recent attack perpetrated against the villagers of Govindpur, Orissa, India. It is reported that these armed people belonged to a private militia contracted by the Pohang Iron and Steel Company (POSCO) whose project is opposed by the local indigenous peoples.

Franciscans International has sent an Urgent appeal to United Nations Special Rapporteur on the adverse effects of the movement and dumping of toxic and dangerous products and wastes on the enjoyment of human rights, Mr. Calin Georgescu, to express serious concern that the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP) will endanger the lives and livelihoods of the local communities in the vicinity of the nuclear site of Kudankulam, Trinelveli District, Tamil Nadu, India.

Franciscans International submitted an Urgent to the Special Rapporteur on the situation of Human rights and fundamental freedom of Indigenous Peoples, Mr. James Anaya, concerning the Construction of a highway through the Isiboro Sécure National Park and Indigenous Territory (TIPNIS), in Boliva which may pose a serious threat to the ecosystems of the area and to the lives and livelihoods of the indigenous peoples that live there.

1) The recent killings of the two Christian minorities and seriously injuring two more in Hyderabad, Pakistan. Read letter of allegation

Hostages in Egypt

FI, on the basis of reliable information received, is seriously concerned about the life and safety of 250 hostages, some Eritrean and other nationalities. They were captured on 20 November 2010, and have been kept in slave-like conditions in the Sinai Desert by human traffickers since then. Among this group are at least 80 Eritreans, who are fleeing brutal religious and political repression in Eritrea. They were trying to seek legitimate asylum in Europe.
